The Psychiatric Service of Shaare Zedek Medical Center provides consultations to all in and out patient services of the hospital, including the ER. Frequently encountered problems include: depression and anxiety, confusion and delirium, hopelessness and desperation, mainly in patients with terminal illness (cancer, congestive heart failure, dialysis e.g.), suicidal behavior and complications of drug /alcohol abuse. Additional areas of activity include: routine assessments of mental capacity in elderly patients who need medical or surgical procedures, teaching medical students and paramedics and departmental clinical research as well as collaboration in interdepartmental research projects.
