The Oncology Institute is responsible for all areas of oncology for adult patients at Shaare Zedek, treating all types of cancerous diseases. The institute treats patients in all of the following stages: diagnosis, devising the patient’s care plan, administration of medicinal treatment including chemotherapy, hormonal and biological drugs, supportive care, alleviating patients’ side effects, palliative care and support of patients with advanced-stage diseases. The Oncology Institute includes 6 units: Day hospitalization, Hemato-Oncology Inpatient Department, Outpatient Clinics, Oncology Pain and Palliative Care Unit, Clinical Research Unit and Experimental Oncology Laboratory.
Research Activities include:
The development of liposomal carriers to reduce the cytotoxicity of currently used chemotherapeutic agents and to improve drug delivery to the tumor vicinity. Biological testing of novel pegylated conjugates of platinum compounds. Experimental studies with various chemotherapy agents. The quality of life of patients with coracle end incurable cancer and issues in pain and care development. The use of opioids in the management of cancer pain. The management of opioid adverse effects. The measurement of pain and the management of breakthrough pain.
