The Division of Geriatrics includes three units of distinct function: Acute Geriatric Department - containing 38 beds. This department treats inpatients with severe illnesses. Rehabilitation Unit - containing 10 beds. The patients hospitalized in this unit usually arrive at the department as a result of a stroke, a broken hip or rehabilitation following an illness accompanied by functional impairment. Nursing Unit - containing 14 beds. Most of the inpatients in the unit are in need of complex nursing services or are in conditions defined as sub-acute. In terms of academic activity, the department staff take part in a variety of research projects, with an average of 6 publications per year and 8-10 presentations in professional conferences.

Research Activities include:

Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Temporal Arteritis. The use of accepted preventive medicine practice among elderly people. The dying patient – when is the point of no return? Representations of elderly patients in clinical trials. Epidemiology of decision on life-sustaining treatment in the division of general internal medicine. Demographic and clinical characteristics of patients admitted to a medical department. Misplacement of percutaneously inserted gastrostomy tube into the colon – rare complication. Antimicrobial susceptibilities of urinary pathogens in a multidisciplinary long-term-care-facility. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation in a geriatric ward. Prevention and amelioration of delirium in elderly patients hospitalized for hip fracture. The prevalence of dementia in geriatric institutions in Jerusalem. The genetic basis of Alzheimer’s disease. The validity of computerized non-invasive cognitive testing in the diagnosis of dementia. Preventive medicine in the elderly.
